How a Sealed System Is Supposed to Work
Refrigerant circulates in a closed loop between the indoor evaporator coil and the outdoor condenser, changing state to absorb heat inside and release it outside. Because the loop is sealed, the amount of refrigerant should never change over the life of the equipment. A system that needed refrigerant two summers ago and needs it again has a leak that was never repaired.
Signs That May Point to a Leak
None of these confirm a leak by itself. Restricted airflow can produce several of the same symptoms, which is why a technician measures rather than assumes.
- Cooling that has weakened gradually over weeks rather than failing suddenly
- Longer run times with less temperature drop across the vents
- Ice forming on the indoor coil or the insulated outdoor line
- A hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor coil or line set
- Higher electric usage without a change in habits
- A system that was recharged previously and is underperforming again
Where Leaks Commonly Develop
- Evaporator coil tubing, including formicary corrosion pinholes
- Brazed joints and fittings on the line set
- Service valves and Schrader cores
- Condenser coil tubing damaged by debris or corrosion
- Vibration-related fatigue points near the compressor
How Leaks Are Located and Repaired
Technicians commonly use electronic leak detectors, ultraviolet dye, bubble solution and nitrogen pressure testing, sometimes in combination. Small evaporator leaks in particular can take patience to find and may require removing panels or isolating sections of the circuit.
Once located, the repair depends on the position and severity. An accessible joint may be repaired and the system evacuated and recharged. A leaking evaporator or condenser coil usually means component replacement. On older systems, especially those using R-22, the cost of coil replacement plus refrigerant frequently prompts a replacement discussion.
Ask any provider to explain where the leak was found, how the repair was verified, and whether the system was evacuated and weighed in rather than simply topped off.
Refrigerant Type Matters
Systems installed before roughly 2010 often use R-22, which is no longer produced for new equipment in the United States. Remaining supply is reclaimed or stockpiled, and pricing reflects that. If your system uses R-22 and needs a substantial charge, factor that into any repair-versus-replacement comparison.
Newer residential equipment commonly uses R-410A, with more recent systems moving to lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants. Refrigerants are not interchangeable, and mixing them is not an acceptable practice.
Safety Considerations
Refrigerant handling is regulated and requires certification, recovery equipment and pressure-rated tools. Do-it-yourself recharge cans sold for automotive use are not appropriate for residential HVAC systems and can introduce contaminants, sealants and incorrect charge levels that complicate later repairs. Leave sealed-system work to a qualified technician.
