Why Coils Freeze
An evaporator coil absorbs heat from indoor air. If not enough warm air moves across it, or if the refrigerant inside is at too low a pressure, the coil surface drops below freezing and condensed moisture turns to ice. Once ice forms, it blocks airflow, which makes the freeze worse — a self-reinforcing cycle that ends with a solid block of ice and no cooling at all.
Broadly, the causes fall into two families: airflow problems and refrigerant problems. Distinguishing between them requires measurement.
Airflow-Related Causes
- A clogged or heavily loaded air filter
- Blocked or closed supply registers and obstructed return grilles
- A dirty evaporator coil restricting air passage
- A failing or slow blower motor, or an incorrect blower speed setting
- Collapsed, crushed or disconnected flexible duct in the attic
- Running the system on unusually cool nights with a low setpoint
Refrigerant-Related Causes
- Low refrigerant charge from a leak in the sealed system
- A restricted metering device or filter drier
- A failing expansion valve not feeding the coil correctly
- A refrigerant circuit contaminated with moisture
What to Do Right Now
Turn the thermostat mode to OFF so the compressor stops making the coil cold. Set the fan to ON so room-temperature air moves across the coil and speeds thawing. Depending on how much ice has accumulated, thawing can take anywhere from an hour to most of a day.
Place towels or a pan under the indoor unit. As ice melts, the volume of water can exceed what the condensate pan and drain handle at once, and overflow around an attic or closet unit can damage ceilings and flooring.
Never chip at ice with a screwdriver or knife. Evaporator coil tubing is thin, and a puncture turns an airflow problem into a refrigerant leak and a much larger repair.
Why It Matters Not to Just Restart It
Running a system with a frozen coil can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor, which is designed to compress vapor, not liquid. Repeated exposure contributes to compressor damage — one of the most expensive failures on a residential system. Thawing first, then diagnosing, protects the equipment.
