Why Simple Rules Fall Short
You have probably heard shortcuts: replace at ten years, replace if the repair costs more than a third of a new system, multiply age by repair cost and compare to a threshold. These heuristics circulate because they are easy to remember, not because they reliably produce good decisions.
A well-maintained system in its fourteenth year with a failed capacitor is worth repairing. A neglected eight-year-old system with a leaking evaporator coil, a history of freeze-ups and rooms that have never been comfortable may not be. Age alone tells you very little.
The better approach is to look at several factors together and notice whether they point in the same direction.
Factor 1: Equipment Age and Condition
Age matters as a proxy for two things: remaining service life of the other components, and how far equipment technology has moved since installation. A system in its mid-teens that needs a major repair is being repaired alongside a compressor, coil, blower and control board of the same vintage.
Condition matters more than the number. Maintenance history, coil condition, electrical component wear and whether the system was correctly installed all affect what remains.
Factor 2: The Cost of This Specific Repair
A capacitor, contactor, float switch, drain clearing or thermostat replacement sits at one end of the range and rarely justifies replacing a functioning system. Evaporator coil replacement, compressor replacement and major sealed-system work sit at the other end.
Compare the repair quote against a replacement estimate — an actual estimate, not a guess. Expressing the repair as a percentage of replacement is useful context, but be careful: no fixed percentage automatically means replace. A repair equal to 40% of replacement cost on a five-year-old system under warranty is a different situation than the same percentage on a sixteen-year-old system with three prior repairs.
Factor 3: Repair History
One repair in five years is normal ownership. Three service calls in two summers is a pattern. Repeated failures often indicate an underlying condition — a persistent leak, chronic airflow restriction, a mismatched pair of components, or an installation issue — that will keep generating repairs regardless of which part gets replaced next.
Keep your invoices. A written history is the single most useful thing you can bring to this decision.
Factor 4: Comfort and Performance
Important caution: several of these are duct and airflow problems, not equipment problems. Replacing equipment without correcting distribution reproduces the same complaints with a new invoice attached. If comfort is your main motivation, insist that any proposal address airflow.

- Weak airflow at some registers
- The system running nearly continuously on hot afternoons
- Noticeable temperature swings between cycles
Factor 5: Efficiency and Operating Cost
Abilene's long cooling season means run hours are high, which increases the impact of efficiency differences. If your electric usage has climbed while your habits have not, and the system is old, that is a real factor — though it should be verified rather than assumed, since a dirty coil, a refrigerant leak or duct leakage can also raise consumption on equipment that is otherwise fine.
Factor 6: Refrigerant Type
Systems using R-22 face limited, expensive refrigerant supply because production for new equipment ended in the United States. A small repair on an R-22 system may still be sensible; a repair requiring a full charge is a different matter. Ask what refrigerant your system uses — it is printed on the outdoor unit's data plate.
Factor 7: How Long You Plan to Stay
If you expect to sell within a year or two, a functional repair may serve you better than a major capital investment. If this is a long-term home, the calculation shifts toward equipment you will live with for a decade or more. Neither answer is wrong; they are simply different situations.
Putting It Together
When several factors point the same direction — older equipment, an expensive repair, a repair history, comfort problems, high operating cost — replacement deserves serious consideration. When they conflict, the repair is usually the lower-risk step while you gather replacement estimates calmly rather than in a heat emergency.
