How a Heat Pump Cools
A heat pump moves heat rather than creating it. In summer it removes heat from indoor air and rejects it outdoors — exactly what an air conditioner does. The difference is a reversing valve that lets the same equipment run the cycle backwards in winter to bring heat inside.
Because heat pumps run in both seasons, they accumulate far more operating hours than a cooling-only system. That makes maintenance and early attention to symptoms more valuable, not less.
Cooling-Season Symptoms
- The system blows warm air while the thermostat calls for cooling
- Cooling works intermittently and switches to warm without explanation
- The outdoor unit runs but indoor temperature does not fall
- Longer run times with weaker temperature drop at the registers
- Unusual noise from the outdoor unit during operation
- The system trips a breaker under load
Causes Specific to Heat Pumps
A reversing valve that fails to shift, or shifts partially, can leave the system operating in the wrong mode or splitting flow between modes — producing lukewarm air even though everything appears to be running. Faulty sensors, defrost board issues and control problems can also cause a heat pump to behave inconsistently in cooling.
Beyond those, heat pumps share the standard failure set with conventional air conditioners: capacitors, contactors, condenser fan motors, refrigerant leaks, dirty coils, restricted airflow and compressor problems. A good diagnostic approach rules out the common items before assuming a reversing valve fault, since that repair is significantly more involved.

- Refrigerant pressures, superheat and subcooling in cooling mode

Maintenance Considerations
Because a heat pump serves both seasons, many contractors recommend service twice a year — before cooling season and before heating season. Coil cleanliness matters in both directions, and airflow problems affect performance year round.
