How Mini-Splits Differ
A ductless system pairs an outdoor condensing unit with one or more indoor heads connected by a small refrigerant line set and a condensate drain. Because there are no ducts, distribution losses disappear — but so does whole-home air mixing and central filtration. Each head conditions the space it serves.
Most modern mini-splits use inverter-driven compressors that vary speed rather than cycling on and off. That produces steadier temperatures and good efficiency, and it also means diagnosis relies more on electronics, sensors and manufacturer error codes than on a conventional system.

Beyond filters, the blower wheel and coil inside the head accumulate film over time and periodically need professional cleaning, since the shrouded design makes casual access impractical. The condensate drain, which usually runs by gravity through the wall, can also clog and cause the classic dripping-down-the-wall complaint.
Outdoors, keep the condensing unit clear of vegetation, dust and debris just as with a conventional system.
