A cooling system is a heat-moving machine, and air is the vehicle. Manufacturers design equipment around a specific airflow rate. Deliver less than that and the coil runs colder than intended, capacity drops, humidity removal changes, and in extreme cases the coil freezes. Deliver it unevenly and some rooms are comfortable while others are not.

Symptoms of a return shortfall include high static pressure, doors that swing on their own when the system runs, whistling at door undercuts, and bedrooms that stay warm when the door is closed. Adding return capacity — a second return, a larger grille, or transfer grilles for closed rooms — is frequently the most effective airflow correction available.
The Supply Side
- Flexible duct that is kinked, crushed, sagging or too long
- Sharp bends and unsupported runs reducing effective diameter
- Disconnected boots at ceiling registers
- Undersized branch runs to distant rooms
- Dampers closed during a prior balancing attempt and forgotten
- Insulation gaps allowing heat gain along attic runs

Keep the filter fresh and use a rating your system can handle. Open all supply registers — closing them to redirect air usually raises static pressure and reduces total airflow. Keep furniture and rugs off return grilles. Leave interior doors open where possible, or ask about transfer grilles for rooms that must be closed.
Then observe. Walk the house with the system running and note which rooms feel weak. That map is the starting point for a productive conversation with a technician.

Static pressure across the air handler is the key diagnostic. Compared against the equipment's rated maximum, it reveals whether the duct system is restricting the blower.
